      Hi dear all,
      The simple test is:

      CREATE TABLE `sbtest85` (
        `id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
        `k` int(11) NOT NULL DEFAULT '0',
        `c` char(120) NOT NULL DEFAULT '',
        `pad` char(60) NOT NULL DEFAULT '',
        PRIMARY KEY (`id`)
      ) ENGINE=InnoDB
      
      
      5.7.21>alter table sbtest85 add column json_column json;
      Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.62 sec)
      Records: 0  Duplicates: 0  Warnings: 0
